During the autumn season, fallen leaves can create low-adhesion conditions on the rail, affecting braking, acceleration, and thereby timetable reliability. Sandite is an anti-slip material that restores adhesion between train wheels and the rail.

By applying Sandite at targeted locations, the impact of low adhesion is reduced, contributing to more reliable and punctual train operations. 

In the Netherlands, a small fleet of passenger trains is equipped with a Sandite pump installation. These trains apply Sandite on predefined track sections based on a configurable application scenario. While operating in normal passenger service, the system automatically activates or deactivates the pump based on the train’s position, speed, and assigned scenario. 

To safely and reliably operate a Sandite installation on passenger trains, it must operate fully autonomously and reliably within the train environment. This functionality is provided by the Sandite Controller System.
