On 13 October, ICT TriOpSys, in collaboration with Hunt & Hackett and Cocoon Risk Management, organised the round table discussion ‘Hybrid Threats in Practice’. During the afternoon, professionals from various fields came together to exchange knowledge, experiences and real-life case studies regarding the ever-strengthening link between physical and digital threats.

When physical and digital threats come together

Organisations are increasingly faced with threats that are not confined to a single domain. A vulnerability within physical security, IT or OT can have consequences for other parts of the organisation. It is precisely at the interfaces between these domains that blind spots can arise.

During the Round Table, various experts and professionals shared specific real-world case studies. They discussed how hybrid threats can develop and escalate, what risks this entails, and how organisations can identify them earlier and manage them more effectively.

Different perspectives from the field

The real-life case studies served as the starting point for a great deal of interaction and valuable discussions. Gabor Verputten, CISO at Waterschapshuis and CER-WM, used a specific case study to explain how physical and digital threats are interlinked in practice and what insights this has yielded.

Daniël Wunderink, CISO at GVB, explained how GVB manages cyber threats and physical risks, from risk analysis and crisis management to involving the board.

Marcel Idema from Fokker Services Group gave us an insight into the organisation’s practical experience. They operate globally within the aviation industry and have extensive experience of complex technical and operational environments.

Participants contributed their own experiences and perspectives from fields including security, IT, OT, physical security and risk management.

It was precisely this combination of different disciplines that highlighted how important it is not to view hybrid threats in isolation. Effective resilience requires collaboration, a holistic view of risks and effective coordination between people, processes and technology.
