Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) is located in the “Tweede Maasvlakte” area of the port of Rotterdam, and is the world’s most automated and innovative container terminal. The terminal’s first commercial activities were started in January 2015, while the official opening took place on 11 September 2015.
The challenge
Soon after starting its commercial activities, RWG experienced the need for a Web Portal, which was to facilitate rapid and accurate information exchanges between RWG and its clients as well as other chain partners such as freight carriers. The Web Portal had to offer a self-service approach, enabling all parties to carry out various services by themselves. The challenge was to release a first operational version of the so-called RWGServices Portal as soon as possible. The project became even more challenging during the realization phase, when RWG requested additional functionality – a mobile application, including the option to send notifications.
The solution
Our team of developers in Barendrecht started their work on the project in March 2015, assisted by the ICT Smart Portal team. Their efforts resulted in a first version that was rolled out at RWG as early as June, hardly six months after the order was commissioned. The first version included a wide range of functionality that saved a substantial amount of work for both RWG and its clients, for instance generating a Terminal Performance and Departure Report (showing the performance figures for handling a vessel). The second version of the Web Portal was released in December and comprised additional functionality such as an interface service for the mobile application. This mobile application was launched on 16 December 2015.
