ICT Group has positioned itself uniquely within the 2GW Program of the national grid operator TenneT. A team of specialists is working closely with TenneT on the development and commissioning of offshore electricity connections. The collaboration began five years ago when ICT Group was asked to take on the automation of this large-scale program for TenneT.

Europe aims to be climate neutral by 2050, and offshore wind energy plays a crucial role in achieving this target. TenneT is committed to delivering a safe, sustainable, and cost-effective energy supply for the Netherlands and large parts of Germany. In addition to balancing electricity supply and demand, the grid operator is responsible for the transport of electricity through the high-voltage network. Between 2029 and 2031, TenneT will build a total of 14 offshore grid connections that will link wind farms in the Dutch and German North Sea to the electricity grid. Preparations for this project began five years ago.

“From ICT Group, we ensure that the energy network can be used as efficiently as possible. We provide direction and add in-depth knowledge.”

Thanks to smarter designs with fewer cables, larger platforms on a smaller footprint, and the use of innovative ICT solutions, the capacity of the high-voltage grid will increase significantly. Each platform will be capable of transporting 2 gigawatts of electricity to shore. These platforms will be roughly the size of a football stadium and feature automation systems that allow them to operate fully autonomously. Within the 2GW Program, the ICT Group team delivers these sustainable OT solutions, which are designed to flexibly adapt to the rapidly evolving dynamics of the energy transition. In doing so, they ensure maximum safety, availability, sustainability and reliability for this vital infrastructure.

Equal Partners in Dialogue

“The role of ICT Group in this high-quality program goes far beyond consultancy,” explains project leader Juriaan Janssen.

“It’s incredibly motivating to be able to contribute to the energy transition and climate goals – to really make a difference for future generations.”

Thanks to ICT Group’s experience in complex water and infrastructure projects, we have developed into equal partners in dialogue with – and on behalf of – TenneT. “Of course, we possess the necessary technical expertise, but we are also highly capable of managing strategic alignment between the various systems,” Juriaan adds.

The Energy Supply of the Future

ICT Group has been given considerable responsibility by TenneT and represents the grid operator in all discussions related to automation and ICT with other partners in the 2GW Program. “We feel part of the bigger picture, and that’s exactly how we’re seen within TenneT,” Juriaan notes. “This project presents a unique opportunity to contribute to the energy supply of the future and to be part of an international team of experts,” he says proudly.
